His delicately painted face, ruddy cheeks, splendid sideburns and rather rakish sideswept hair are particularly charming.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis is a \u003c\/span\u003escarce variation\u003cspan\u003e, with differences in the positioning of the left foot and sword, and the arrangement of the cannonballs.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eVictorian Staffordshire figures are wonderful examples of British folk art, capturing the heroes, villains and popular obsessions of their day. Mould-made but individually decorated, often by women, each has its own distinctive character and wonderfully wonky charm.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe details of this example are consistent with period manufacture:\u003cspan\u003e cobalt-blue underglaze, softly coloured gilding, a faint blue tinge to the glaze and an unglazed footrim. There is also a tiny vent hole beneath the right epaulette and a firing split to the side of the base, both characteristic of the manufacturing process.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan\u003eCondition:\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e Very good antique condition, with finely painted detail. Minor paint loss and worn gilding, consistent with age.
