Antique Fluted Tart Plate | Provincial English Spongeware | Mid 19th Century
Handpainted and spongeware fluted tart plate from England, painted with trailing ivy tendrils from the mid-19th century.
Relatively few pieces of provincial, utilitarian pottery survive from Victorian times in this condition. Ceramics of this type were used by working class households, who didn't have china cabinets or roomy attics to keep heirlooms in. Almost always unmarked and with simple, hand-painted folk art designs, they were used to death and thrown away.
This plate has a beautiful texture - both from the fluted, scalloped shape and the rough earthenware material. It's decorated with a cream glaze and forest green ivy tendrils, and a sponged rim.
There is a very similar tart plate in the Collection of the Museum of Western Australia, where it is dated to pre-1860.
Condition: For it's age and type excellent. Structurally sound, with minimal glaze nibbling around the outside of the plate. There is typical crazing in the glaze and a hairline fault in the glaze on the front of the plate, but it is almost definitely only in the glaze, as it doesn't go through to the other side of the plate. On the back of the plate, there is some glaze discolouration in one area.
