Antique Terracotta Clay Hearth Pot | Tian Bowl | Mediterranean | Mid- to Late-19th Century
A mid-to-late 19th-century utilitarian double-handled cooking pot, or tian, from the Mediterranean region, probably Provence, but maybe Languedoc or Northern Spain. Still with faint traces of soot near the handles, it has been used on an open hearth or wood-fired stove.
Beautifully imperfect, the body is made from coarse natural clay and the interior hand dunked into an ochre-coloured slip glaze. It was made entirely by hand on a manual kick wheel, with hand-pulled ear loop handles added before it was put in a wood-fired kiln.
Condition: Excellent for its age and use. There are some nibbles on the rim, which is expected.
Dimensions: H 13.5cm x W 25.5 cm
