Royal Child on Spaniel Staffordshire Figure | Prince of Wales | Pre-1865
Charming and relatively uncommon Victorian Staffordshire figure of the Prince of Wales, son of Queen Victoria later Edward VII, riding on a red and white spaniel.
The dog is sitting smartly while the prince clings on to it's back. This mould was perhaps designed with the skirt as a kilt, since he wearing traditional Scottish Highland dress socks (kilt hose, or moggans), but on this figure the painter has delicately sprigged his kilt/skirt with flowers.
Victorian Staffordshires look brilliant with a vase of garden flowers and add a pop of colour to a room. Featuring nice, bright colours and minimal paint loss, this is a whimsically wonky ornament to decorate with and a collectable piece.
Staffordshires are essentially folk art. Broadly speaking, they started out in the Georgian times as elegant figures in tasteful pastels and frequently classical subjects made for the wealthy, and then evolved in the Victorian period into a brighter palette and a more simple, folk art style. They reflect the interests of ordinary Victorians and run the gamut from the cheerfully odd like this one, through military heroes to anti-heroes like smugglers and highwaymen.
This one can be dated to pre-1865 as they stopped using the Cobalt underglaze used for his coat then. The details are consistent with period manufacture including softly coloured gilding, a faint blue tinge to the glaze and an unglazed footrim. The vent hole is on the bottom and is 4mm wide.
The details of this example are consistent with period manufacture: cobalt-blue underglaze, softly coloured gilding, a faint blue tinge to the glaze and an unglazed footrim. There is also a tiny vent hole beneath the right epaulette and a firing split to the side of the base, both characteristic of the manufacturing process.
Condition: Very good. There are some small flakes of paint loss on the dog's nose and shoulder paint, but overall the figure is in great condition. No chips, cracks or nibbles and he has been checked with a UV light and there are no hidden repairs. There is a dot of white paint on the front, where the gold gilt line around the base is. There is some wear to the gilding, but this is expected.
