Opaline Glass Tumbler | French Savonneuse Glass | Early 19th Century
Pretty French glass beaker or tumbler made in France in the first half of the 19th Century. This kind of glass is called 'savonneuse' or soap bubble in English and is associated with the Charles X period. When you hold it up against a light and look through the base, the glass has a swirl in it, like soap bubbles.
Hand painted with flowers, leaves, and with a gold gilt viola as the centrepiece, it's touch of antique French élégance.
The delicate prettiness of the design would suit a small posy of simple winter evergreens, with candlelight nearby to catch the soft gold. A bunch of snowdrops would also look beautiful.
It would also look great with an electric tealight inside, which would make the glass glow.
Condition: Good. No chips, cracks, or scratches (except on the base, from use), but there are areas where the gold gilt has worn away, particularly around the rim. Savonneuse glass in perfect condition is expensive, but this is priced as a decorative object.
Please note: The inside of the glass looks stained in the pictures as it was put on a dark wood table to be photographed. It's actually immaculate.
Dimensions: H 8.5cm x W 8cm
