The Flower Fields of Alpine Switzerland | Richly Illustrated First Edition | 1911
A beautiful book with enduring appeal on the beauty of alpine flower meadows in spring. Great for a book collector, even better for a lover of wild flowers, alpines or travel. Fully titled 'The Flower Fields of Alpine Switzerland, An Appreciation and a Plea', it includes beautiful illustrations of alpine meadows that were painted in place, including botanical names on the tissue leaves for those interested in the plant communities that grow together, as well as a heartfelt plea to preserve these wild places that were already under pressure.
Rockeries have slid out of fashion since their peak in the early 20th century, but this book gives you a glimpse into the wild beauty of alpine pastures. Now that Great Dixter has built a rockery near to their world famous meadow, alpine plants are sure to come back into the spotlight, and they deserve to, as with ever-smaller gardens and a changing climate, they have a lot to offer. I just wish I could grow them well myself.
Condition: Very good. All illustrations and their tissue covers still present, not torn or crumpled. Nice clean cover, spine tight, top gilding still shiny, the odd spot of foxing (light brown dots that appear on old books), but remarkably good for its age. An inscription on the back leaf reads "To Mother from Basil Gummer, Xmas 1912". Basil had clearly left his wrapping to the last moment, as its upside down. Oh Basil.
