Uncommon Vegetables and Fruits: How to Grow and How to Cook | Eleanour Sinclair Rohde | Country Life Books 1943
Uncommon Vegetables and Fruits: How to Grow and How to Cook by Eleanour Sinclair Rohde, who wrote a number of gardening books at the time. This one was published under the Country Life imprint in 1943. The author deserves to still be well-known as her no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read.
While there are lots of vegetables and fruit in there that are now everyday staples, such as peppers and aubergines, there are still plenty of gems to be discovered, and practical, expert advice on how to grow them. Best of all, when a crop is tough to prepare or eat, she says so. Bluntly.
Particularly recommended for anyone interested in heritage varieties, as she occasionally discusses lost regional varieties, including those available pre-war and even in Victorian times.
Some of the cooking advice should be taken with a pinch of salt - and about an hour less boiling time - but all in all, this is a gem.
