Scarce Victorian Staffordshire Figure | Admiral Sir Charles Napier | Before 1855
A fabulous and unusual Victorian Staffordshire figure of a Royal Navy admiral, probably Sir Charles Napier.
Beautifully modelled and hand-painted, he cuts a magnificent figure in his naval uniform, with sword, cocked hat, cannon and cannonballs. His delicately painted face, ruddy cheeks, splendid sideburns and rather rakish sideswept hair are particularly charming.
This is a scarce variation, with differences in the positioning of the left foot and sword, and the arrangement of the cannonballs.
Victorian Staffordshire figures are wonderful examples of British folk art, capturing the heroes, villains and popular obsessions of their day. Mould-made but individually decorated, often by women, each has its own distinctive character and wonderfully wonky charm.
The details of this example are consistent with period manufacture: cobalt-blue underglaze, softly coloured gilding, a faint blue tinge to the glaze and an unglazed footrim. There is also a tiny vent hole beneath the right epaulette and a firing split to the side of the base, both characteristic of the manufacturing process.
Condition: Very good antique condition, with finely painted detail. Minor paint loss and worn gilding, consistent with age. The firing split is noted above.
Dimensions: H 20.5cm × W 8cm × D 4cm.
