Victorian Staffordshire Spill Vase | Little Red Riding Hood | 1850 - 1865
Victorian spill vase featuring Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf in the forest. Little Red Riding Hood has a sweetly painted face with a little blush to her face, and the wolf a wonderfully cunning look as he eyes her up.
Staffordshire spill vases have a humble, folk art charm. Made for the masses they featured characters from everyday life, fairy tales and the pop culture of the time. They are classics of English decorating style and give any room a layered feel.
Originally intended for rolls of paper to light kindling, many spill vases are unsuitable for use as a vase because of firing faults. This one has been tested and is water tight, so can be used for flowers.
Dimensions: H 26cm x W 14cm x D 6.5cm
Condition: Overall, it's in excellent condition for its age. No chip or cracks, and no losses to the shredded clay, but some small missing flakes of enamel, which is expected due to the age - Staffordshires were usually painted after they were fired, so the enamel gets worn. This wouldn't have been hidden away in a cabinet, it would have been on the mantelpiece in the parlour and it would have been handled a lot.
