Olive Oil or Water Jar | Konya Pot | Eastern Mediterranean Pre-1950
Rustic and beautiful vintage Konya Pot from Anatolia, Turkey, or the Eastern Mediterranean, where they were used to store olive oil. Probably early to mid 20th century, judging by the base, but perhaps earlier. These pots were no longer made in this way from the 1950s.
Head thrown terracotta clay, it has a brilliant surface texture, with heavy, authentic pitting, iron spots, and carbon blackening from an old wood-fired kiln.
You can see it was and-thrown on a manual kick-wheel by the slight horizontal bands. The best feature of this pot, apart from the medley of textures and tones, is the clear thumbprints where the handles were applied, leaving a visible mark of the hands that made it.
Size-wise, its small enough for a table, but big enough to make an impact. It's an ideal vase for displaying a few green branches – evergreens in winter, blossoms in spring, and an olive branch or two in summer would all look brilliant. It's glazed on the inside, so is water-tight.
Condition: Good. There is a shallow chip on the rim (pictured), where an unglazed firing fault has come away. Otherwise it is in perfect condition.
Dimensions: H 25.5cm W 18cm x D 13cm
